Volvo Ocean Race Action in Baltimore

volvo ocean racing yachtThere is sailing - then there is extreme sailing. Even though we were on the relatively peaceful waters of Chesapeake Bay, the In-Port race off Baltimore was a fantastic spectacle as these huge yachts tussled with each other. vGary & Satka After crossing the southern oceans, battling broken equipment, sleeplessness and the white knuckled action of ocean racing, the yachts were still racing for prestige and points during the inport race.

We joined the fleet on Chesapeake Bay on race-day. Spectator boats jostled for position while the racers made ready. But onboard probably the largest spectator boat that day, the Majestic Star, we had "pole position" alongside the turning buoy and start/finish line where the yachts made their turns. High above the fleet, our participants had perfect views of the race while enjoying a classic Chesapeake crab and seafood feast.

Racing personalities along with Gary Jobson of Olympic commentry fame and numerous yachting accolades, treated us to a blow by blow description of the race and what life on board can be like on the yachts tearing across the southern oceans at 30knots through huge seas. It was amazing that even after racing all afternoon across the Bay, there were still only seconds between the finishing yachts. All in all, it was a wonderful day of sailing, Chesapeake Bay crab and great company.
